It burns when you urinate, you’re in the bathroom frequently and your urine smells. You definitely have a urinary tract infection…or do you? UTI symptoms are actually very general and can often be the symptoms of other underlying conditions.
Here are the most common UTI symptoms and the other medical conditions that could be causing them:
You’re Urinating Frequently
While frequent urination is a common symptom of a UTI, you might also be spending more time in the bathroom because of the following medical conditions:
- An enlarged prostate (men)
- Anxiety and stress
- Use of diet pills and other diuretics
- Interstitial cystitis
- Overactive bladder
- Different Scent to Urine
Strange Odors from Your Urine
UTI’s can result in a strange odor, but other things can cause your urine to have an unpleasant scent.
- Eating certain foods (like asparagus)
- Taking vitamins
- Dehydration
- Ketones in the urine
- Discolored Urine
Altered Color of Your Urine
Urinary tract infections can cause a slight tint to your urine, but a color change could also be caused by:
- Hepatitis and other liver diseases
- Urinary tract cancers
- Kidney stones
- Eating certain foods
Burning when Urinating
If you suddenly notice pain or burning while urinating, it can be due to a UTI. But, another medical condition could be the culprit of this unpleasant symptom, such as:
- Sensitivity to soups or other fragrances
- An infection of the vulva (women)
- Kidney stones
