What Causes Kidney Stones?

Kidney stones are commonly caused by a build-up of salt and minerals, or calcium-oxalate, that are eventually passed through your urine. While kidney stones are usually are a minor problem, they can cause severe pain.

Here are a few of the most common causes of kidney stones:

Diet

One of the biggest causes of kidney stones is your diet. The foods that that can increase your chances of getting a kidney stone are:

  • Red meats
  • Foods high in sodium
  • Foods high in oxalates (Nuts/seeds, tea, soy, vegetable greens, spinach and berries)
  • Foods high in calcium

These foods  negatively affect your kidney’s ability to properly filter calcium and dilute acid.

Genetics

Genetics play an important role. While you don’t have much control over genetics, it is important to be aware of the following genetic causes of kidney stones:

  • family history of kidney stones
  • men between the ages of 30-50
  • diseases and conditions such as Crohn’s Disease, past UTI and Gout

Supplements

While kidney stones are more directly affected by genetics and diet, studies have shown that there is some correlation between mineral supplements, such as calcium and vitamin D, and kidney stones.
